Public Citizen Names Two Groups For Whom Fosamax Has No Benefit of Therapy

Bone-strengthening drug Fosamax became a blockbuster medicine in the United States and the rest of North America because of the millions of Americans dealing with osteoporosis. Although this bisphosphonate works in wonder against osteoporosis, it also carries undesirable effects, including a risk for osteonecrosis of the jaw. Now, what is osteonecrosis of the jaw and what everyone needs to know about this serious dental condition?

In a recent food and drug Administration (FDA) assembly, the issue about doctors prescribing bisphosphonates indiscriminately was also addressed. Furthermore, consumer activist Public Citizen cited two groups who are not getting any benefits from medications. These populations who may be unnecessarily taking the drug are also putting themselves at risk of this jaw bone problem.

Osteonecrosis of the jaw, which is commonly known as ONJ or “dead jaw,” pertains a dental condition in which a portion of the jawbone protrudes above the gums. It usually occurs when part of the bone does not get enough blood supply, leading to the death of the bone tissue. Scientists have coined the terms “Bis-phossy Jaw” and BON for ONJ in relation to the use of bisphosphonates like Fosamax.

During the first stage of ONJ, patient seems asymptomatic until the later stages when one could experience pain, swelling and redness usually associated with gum infections. The hallmark sign of ONJ is the exposure of bone tissue which lasts for more than 2 months. Moreover, dental surgeries like tooth extraction could aggravate the condition.

In most cases, ONJ is treated non-surgically with antimicrobial rinses, systemic antibiotics, systemic or topical antifungal medications and pain reliever. In later stages, treatment might require surgical debridement or resection in conjunction with other nonsurgical treatment. It is imperative to inform the dentist if one is on a bisphosphonate treatment before any surgical intervention – no matter how minor - is carried out

The revisions involving ONJ risk made by Merck on Fosamax label per FDA’s request have been made available to the public in July 2005. Nonetheless, several long-term Fosamax patronizers claimed that Merck lacked proper disclosure of the said risk causing them to agonize such side effect and other backlash. Several individuals who believed to have harmed by the drug are now filing a Fosamax lawsuit against the manufacturer of the drug.
