Public Citizen Names Two Groups For Whom Fosamax Has No Benefit of Therapy
Because millions of Americans are afflicted with osteoporosis, bone-strengthening drug Fosamax has been considered one of the bestselling drugs in the United States and North America. Unfortunately, the benefits of this bisphosphonate comes along with unwanted consequences like the risk osteonecrosis of the jaw. But before anything else, let’s take deeper look on this severe dental condition called osteonecrosis of the jaw.
In the recent past, the food and drug Administration (FDA) had discussed about health care providers not carefully prescribing biphosphonates to their patients. Furthermore, consumer activist Public Citizen cited two groups who are not getting any benefits from Fosamax medications. These people may be needlessly risking themselves to this jaw bone condition.
Osteonecrosis of the jaw, also known as ONJ and "dead jaw," is a condition in which an area of the jawbone is exposed. This bone tissue does not receive enough blood supply, which eventually leads to the its death or necrosis. Scientists have coined terns such as “Bis-phossy Jaw” and BON to describe bisphosphonate-related ONJ.
During the first stage of ONJ, patient seems asymptomatic until the later stages when one could experience pain, swelling and redness usually associated with gum infections. A trademark for ONJ is the (visible exposure of) bone tissue which may last for more than eight weeks. Moreover, dental surgeries like tooth extraction could aggravate the condition.
ONJ is generally treated with non-surgical approach consisting of antimicrobial rinses, systemic antibiotics, systemic or topical antifungal treatment and pain relievers. In later stages, treatment might require surgical debridement or resection in conjunction with other nonsurgical treatment. It is imperative to inform the dentist if one is on a bisphosphonate treatment before any surgical intervention – no matter how minor - is carried out
In July 2005, new revisions regarding ONJ risks by Merck on Fosamax label was made available on public as a reponse to the request from the FDA a few months before. Yet, some Fosamax patients, who are using the drug for a long time, believed that Merck did not properly warned its patients, causing them to deal with the side effects and other drug backlash. Several individuals who believed to have harmed by the drug are now filing a Fosamax lawsuit against the maker of the drug.
